Children send you the best greetings in Jesus Christ, from G.C.H. Kalimpong, north India.
The children are doing fine. They finished their monthly test and most of the children done good and some are improving. Health wise they are good and all the children praying for their sponsors and USA economy to improve.

Present Situation at Kalimpong, (Eastern Himalayan Region of North India)

The electricity is irregular, I mean frequently load-sharing and black-out (no power). If you would like to call or talk with the child you sponsor, you may call at Grace Children home’s land line phone (0091-3552-259438), it is working some time some time not working. Setup an account with www.pennytalk.com to call at the rate of 5 cents per minute. You can also schedule a time to Skype your child to be able to not only talk to them but see them live on your computer as well.

Cellular service in our region is quite un-predictable, these few days, most of the times no network. The only life line road NH 31 linking the region with Siliguri and rest part of the country is often blocked or swiped off by land slides due to heavy monsoons. From Last night it is started indefinite strike, roads, schools, shops, hospitals, offices (government or private) closed due to political instability in the region. Local political party is demanding separate statehood in the region.

We are doing fine and the children also. All the children (Grace Children Home) are studying at home and playing inside the room, all well. We are very thankful and grateful for all your love, prayers, friendship, financial-supports and partnership in the family and in the ministry in Christ. We all love you and think of you often.

Sincerely in Christ.
Pastor Nandu and family.

World Cup Football match is going on at South Africa. The children of GCH, like to play football very much and last night (18th June 2010) it was USA vs Slovenia. All the children ate dinner quite early and waiting for the match to start. They were quite anxious that USA team would lead the first goal, but in the first half Slovenia scored 2 goals and our children were not very happy. All the children started to praying… and after some time the break was over and started 2nd half of the game. USA scored the very first goal in this match, our children shouted like anything in the room and so all started shouting USA, USA, USA, we want USA, and in next few minutes USA scored 2nd goal and it was 2 by 2 goals. Our children were very happy and just before the end of the football match USA scored 3rd goal but some reason it was not counted, our children were disappointed. They think all the sponsors live in USA and they pray for USA, they shout for USA and they are happier children. They really pray for USA and sponsors.

It was 12th June after noon, we took all the children for outing, hired two long body taxi jeeps to take up to the mountain (at Dello Hill) about 6-7 km away from the town. There are green lawns and ground to play for the children. 26 children, plus Apphia, Nicolas and 4 staffs and Anu and I (Ps. Nandu). We got the entry tickets for the children to the park and children were excited and started to play football, some started to run up and down etc. We were watching children play and enjoying them to be real and wild. (Children are children).
The bigger boys grouped and started to play football. I was watching from them all. Some wanted horse ride for fun, we did for some of them. As the boys were playing football the ball went off the ground and a boy nam ed Punshiba Sing jumped down to pick the ball. It was not much higher, but he came running and jumped off but didn’t noticed there was a wire bared fence where he stocked his legs and flipped down below on the side where there was concrete road. We didn’t notice for a second but he didn’t come up. So ran after him to see him down and was in the agony and pain. Imme diately we reached to him to find his condition and he couldn’t speak and suddenly he went to shock-unconsciousness. We brought cold water sprinkled on his forehead and face, no response. We started to pray and the people gathered around and were asking what had happened to the boy? We were so nervous and stunned. Even in the panic, I phone a taxi Jeep driver immediately from my cell phone, it took about 15-20 minutes to reach to the boy and we without delay took him to the hospital emergency. Doctor carefully assessed and checked his eye with a light, checked his blood pressure and pulse. The blood pressure was normal, but eyes didn’t respond blinks, no response to voice or went to complete shock and still unconsciousness. Doctor advised to take him to Siliguri (3 hrs drive) for the C.T. Scan (brain) and other relative check-up/ treatment. Doctor said, “We don’t know whether he will be able to move or not his hands or legs?” We started to pray. All the children started to pray with tears in their eyes. (We noticed their love for each other; it is more than a family).

But the road to Siliguri was blocked due to heavy rainfall and taking him in a taxi with the bad road condition was more risky comparatively. Doctor’s alternative suggestion was to observe him 10-12 hrs with complete bed rest in the hospital, and so we agreed. We admitted him in the surgical ward, nurses gave him glucose-slain water dripped into his vain and some injection for his brain to work and doctors visited him every half an hour to see his improvement. By God’s grace and so the answer of our prayers and prayers of the children after 6 hrs. of unconsciousness Punshiba the boy came back to his sense, normalcy. He started respond, opened his eyes and spoke in soft voice telling where it was paining him. We thank God with tears of joy. All the children faces were brighten up.

Punshiba said, he didn’t hit his head while he fell, but his front chest and soldier landed on the hard floor so doctor cancelled for CT scan, rather we did his chest X-ray and he was given some injections and medicines with vitamins. He was discharged after 3 days from the hospital and he is doing good at home. God is good, He answers our prayers. Punshiba is well and plying with other children. We have special diet for him for 1-2 weeks to recover him.

Psalm 6:2 David prays for bones to be healed. He is our healer (physically) too.
(Attached photo is the boy, Punshiba Sing).
He is our refuse in times of trouble and needs.

You will notice Pastor Nandu eludes to that in some of his updates. Please pray for Pastor Nandu and his family and the children of the GCH orphanage. The good news is that the children are being taken care of in Pastor Nandu’s home as they search for a long term solution, but as you can imagine it is somewhat crowded to say the least. The children continue to be healthy, spiritually and physically, and are continuing to grow and learn through Pastor Nandu and his wife Anu’s caring and guidance.

I talked with the landlord and they have given us some time for shifting the children, until we finish our beds made in our down floor’s rooms for the children. We have planned to make double deck beds where the children can sleep on the top and also in the below to adjust all the children. The approximate cost of the beds for all the children to shift down floor in our house estimated by a carpenter $1155. This includes all the materials & carpentry costs. We also have to make an additional toilet for the children in the ground floor (this has to be estimated separately), because we have 2 toilets in the ground floor which is not sufficient for all the children and staffs. 1, toilet is being used by the staffs, and only 1 toilet for 28 children and which is quite an important need to consider immediately. It might be little confusing from the last budgeting for the beds, is because the beds were designed differently (that was individual beds) in the previous children’s rooms, but the ground floor of our house we have arranged differently, to adjust all the children to sleep together on the top and on the bottom

On 3rd March 2010 one of the ladies from Rangpo village brought Bina to Grace Children Home, left her and went away. After 1 month no one came to claim the girl and we adopted her into the home.

Bina’s father died few months after her birth. Bina’s mother, the late Rajani, worked on the river side collecting sands and rocks for road construction. In June of 2009 she committed suicide Bina has no close relatives to give her shelter or guardianship.

We understand Bina worshiped Hindu gods in her home. She was mentally and physically abused, tortured & abandoned after her mother’s death.

Bina would cry a lot, but only after 2 months she has started to smile with the other children at the Childrens Home. Bina is learning to pray. We have admitted her to school and she is slowly improving.

As we know most naughtiness lies at the children age. Many funny incidents often occur within our children while playing or eating. Recently all the children were ready for dinner so we told them just to close their eyes and pray for the food. As I started the prayer the power turned off. After I had finished the prayer, one boy was missing all of his meat curry from his plate. He went searching in other’s plate but the boy who took his meat curry hide it in his rice.

One day the youngest boy name Aditya was playing with the youngest girl Shamiksha. As they were playing they saw a picture of two babies and started comparing their faces with them saying who was similar with this picture.

Once all the bigger boys and girls were playing hide and seek. Tashi went to hide himself in the toilet. Another boy knew that he is in the toilet, so he locked the Tashi in. As the game was over everybody came out of their hiding place but Tashi. He began shouting for help from the toilet. From that day onward he never wants to play hide and seek.

A Few Serious Incidents

Recently when playing football a boy fell as he
stepped on the rolling ball and got a bad cut on
his right hand. Binod went to collect water nearby
since water is scare in our area. He slipped and
fell getting a deep cut on his leg. Pastor Nandu
immediately took Binod to the hospital. He got 12
stitches and was fine after a few weeks.

Last week a girl name Rebecca badly suffered from
a fever and was in bed for nearly a week. She and
her school friends ate food being sold by the
road-side vendors.

Small children are doing great improvement in writing and reading it is really very encouraging to see their improvements. When they came to GCH, most all the children were very poor and some of them had never been to school, but within a short period of time they begin to learn and their reading and writing quickly improved. Anu gives individual care to each child, tutoring and teaching them after they return from school each day into the afternoon & evening.

Aditya was brought to our home on 20th October by one of his village’s lady. She explained that his father died and his mother left him in the village alone and she was gone for more than a week. They waited her to back but didn’t return home. Later they realized she was mentally disordered and begging for herself for food on the roads. One of the lady of the village left Aditya in our home (abandoned). His parents actually were refugees from Nepal and have no any proper address. Aditya’s father used to work at roadside construction and his mother as well. We saw the boy was innocent, helpless and looked sweet. In fact financially we were not in the position to take him in our home however we couldn’t even deny because he has nobody in this world to go to. We kept him in the home but next day we had to admit him in the hospital because he was brought sick and was suffering from blood dysentery. Today on 14th November he is discharged and he is still under doctor’s medication.

He is recovering from his sickness and he calls father to everyone who gives little love to him and calls Anu Mother. It is touching and heart breaking to see these children eating food. They are rejected and abandoned.

Thamber’s father died when he was three years old. In Manipur, the clan system is somewhat stronger and Thamwar Dilbung invariably was housed with one or another relative apart from his mother who was not earning and could not provide her children with either proper food or clothing. Thamber came to us from a different state with different language and cultural set-up – the Home was just a place where he would get his meals, his shelter and clothes on his body.

Therefore, Thamber was more disoriented than the others. He couldn’t communicate with the other children except for Darshel who came to the Home with him, the food was different, there was not another face that he knew and so the two boys were initially more closed in than the others.Like the rest of the children, Thamber too was malnourished and sickly and wouldn’t eat well. It was a difficult time rehabilitating Thamwar. But children are children and Thamwar gradually began to respond to his new situation. He is now healthier and happier. He has developed a friendly attitude and is able to play with other children. He enjoys the home.

We were even able to get him admitted to a local school where he has quickly responded to his new world of learning. He seems to have a keen mind and because he is still not fully acquainted with the Nepali language, we notice that he has a sharper sense of observation than the others. He especially enjoys learning new games – football seems to be in his blood, and he is happiest when he is on the field.
